SAR JROTC CADET RECOGNITION PROGRAMS
The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) awards the Bronze ROTC Medal to foster the principle of the “citizen-soldier,” exemplified by the Minutemen of the Revolutionary War . This award is presented by a SAR Chapter to high school JROTC cadets who are selected for having a high degree of merit with respect to leadership qualities, military bearing, and general excellence. Cadets must be Juniors, in the top 10% of their JROTC Class, and in the top 25% of their academic class and/or a GPA of 3.5 or above. The recipients are selected by the Senior Military Instructor of the JROTC unit. One cadet in each unit sponsored by the Washington SAR is eligible to receive this recognition.
Separate and distinct from the JROTC Bronze Medal awards is the Enhanced JROTC Essay Competition for Outstanding Cadet. This competition is conducted on the Chapter, State and National levels. Entering criteria are identical to the JROTC Bronze Medal award, but in addition, cadets are asked to write an original essay on the impact of JROTC on their American Citizenship. An exhaustive application listing cadet activities and achievements, plus letters of recommendation from the school Principal and the unit’s Senior Military Instructor complete the entrant’s package. Winners are judged at the Chapter level, and all Chapter winners are judged at State level. The State winner is then entered into the National SAR Competition to compete against all State winners. Winners will receive appropriate SAR Bronze, Silver and Gold Outstanding Cadet Medals for Chapter, State and National level wins, respectively, and monetary awards designated by the Chapter, State and National Societies. National and Washington State awards are listed below.
